Davidoff (Skip Bio)

The Beginning

Zino Davidoff's guiding principal - “Smoke less, but smoke the best” - made a cult of it, a philosophy. The tobacco, the very best tobacco, would be the central theme throughout his life. His father Henri came from a family of bona fi de “Harmandgis” - specialists working from home, selecting and blending a wide variety of oriental tobaccos.

Born in Kiev in 1906, Zino Davidoff and his family moved from Russia to Geneva, where Davidoff senior opened a tobacco shop on the Boulevard des Philosophes. After leaving school in 1924, Zino set out for Central America. To Argentina, Brazil and of course, Cuba. It was during this five-year stay in Latin America that he learned the art of tobacco manufacturing. Cultivation, drying, curing, blending and tasting.

After returning to Switzerland in 1929, he opened a special cigar department in his father's shop in Geneva, where he built a special cigar ?cave? in which to store cigars, the fi rst cigar humidor of its kind in Europe.

The Story Of A Davidoff Humidor

Like good wine, fine cigars must be stored under optimum conditions in order to preserve their outstanding aroma as long as possible. To achieve this, both humidity and temperature must remain constant, and the cigars must be protected against light and the intrusion of unwelcome odors. Which is why the serious smoker takes pride in owning a Davidoff Cigar Humidor.

For perfect storage, Zino Davidoff invented the humidor many years ago, a case with an integrated humidity regulator.

In 1965, Zino Davidoff began collaborating with a cabinet-maker from Ste. Croix, a village in Switzerland's Jura mountains famous throughout the world for its music boxes and master cabinet-makers. In those early years, only a few of these cigar lover's treasures were made and sold at Davidoff's shop in Geneva. During the past 30 years, Davidoff has perfected its range of unparalleled humidors. Now in the hands of third generation craftsmen, the workshop, since mid 2005 in La Chaux-de-Fonds in the Jura mountains, is still Davidoff's exclusive manufacturer of humidors.

The Making Of A Davidoff Humidor

Humidor manufacturing is an art that the master craftsmen have perfected over the years. Anyone who knows the result of their work, or has had the chance to watch the 150 steps that go into the making of a single humidor, will certainly confirm this. The natural wood veneers have to be selected and stored with the utmost care.

The large variety of native and tropical woods includes everything from Maple to Zebrano. Davidoff's humidor maker is also one of the very few cabinetmakers to use Thuya-root, which is very difficult to work with.

It goes without saying that the humidor box, which in this case is made of a combination of solid and special woods, also has to live up to Davidoff's high standards. The veneer and base are carefully glued together and sanded down to exact size. Once the parts have been assembled, the humidor is lacquered twice (in a seven-stage process) before being once again sanded and polished by hand. In selected models the humidor will have trays and movable dividers.

The time and work invested in each humidor are apparent in the exceptional high quality of the fi nished product.

The locks and hinges are made exclusively for Davidoff and are attached by hand - a job that requires extreme skill. The locks (in selected models, hinges and side grips ( in selected models) are all gold plated. And every one will have a magnet to hold a Davidoff scissor cutter.

Davidoff humidification devices are ranked in the top best in the world. They will maintain a relative humidity of 70% automatically - that makes a hygometer unnecessary. The best conditions are between 68% to 73% optimum. The Davidoff humidifier usually has to be filled with distilled water every 2 to 3 months. All models carry the large Davidoff Regulator, with the exception of “office” model which will have the “small” Davidoff Regulator.

The Davidoff humidors can be found in:
